Sophia Hotokouridou was born in 1883 AD in a small village in the province of Ardasi, Tripoli, in Trabzon. Saint Sophia lost her two years old child and, three years later, she lost her husband as well. Since then, Saint Sophia decided to live ascetically in the mountains, in order to dedicate herself to the Lord and to escape the raids. In 1927 AD, after Virgin Mary appeared to her, Saint Sophia went to the Holy Monastery of Klisoura in Kastoria. There, she lived a lonely and hard ascetic life, until she died on May 6, 1974 AD. On July 1, 2012, the Ecumenical Patriarch in Kastoria announced the official canonization of Saint Sophia from Klisoura. Her memory is celebrated on May 6.
