Atlas of Athos - Атлас Афона - Άτλας του Άθωνος
One could, without risk of contradiction, predict that the monumental Atlas of Athos compiled by Paul M. Mylonas will make history. It will, for many years to come, be an invaluable resource to all those interested in the more than millennial history of the Holy Mountain. A graphic documentation of that history, commented on with erudition and sagacity, the Atlas will prove indispensable to the study and comprehension of Athonite Monasticism in all its aspects.
P. Mylonas has spared no effort to assemble the documentary evidence that his predecessors, the travellers and cartographers of the past, have left on the subject. The true value, however, of the Atlas, lies in the breadth and precision of Mylonas' own documentation. One senses the labour, the time, the patience, indeed the passion needed to draw up the maps, the painstackingly accurate drawings (accurate indeed, as they have been checked time and again), the so evacuative drawings and lay-outs; the care taken even in the selection of the beautiful photographs which accompany the text. The whole provides us with the first scientific description we have of Athos, its landscapes and monuments. It is thanks to this research work and to the careful measured drawings that Mylonas was able to elucidate the problems of origin and formulate a theory on the formation of the architectural types of Mount Athos.
The Atlas is, clearly, a new source for further research in topography, architecture, art history […]
