The main sea port of Mount Athos
The bay of Dafni (or Daphne) and its homonymous settlement are the largest (central) port of Mount Athos. It is located on the west coast of the Athonian Peninsula, very close to the Xeropotamou Monastery.
The stream of Dontas passes through the bay of Dafni and empties into the sea, which is also the geographical border between the Monasteries of Xeropotamou and Simonopetra.
The importance of Dafni from antiquity to the present day
The unceasing value of the port of Dafni has been known since ancient times. According to historical data, at this place there was a temple in honor of Apollo.
In the recent history of Mount Athos, Dafni became a point of reference, as here, after 488 years of Ottoman occupation, the Greek flag was raised on November 2, 1912.
The key location of Dafni stands out to this day, being the first stop for pilgrims, who come to visit the monastic state of Athos.
During the winter season, the port of Dafni often remains blocked due to weather conditions and strong winds that do not allow ferry boats and ships to sail. Prohibition notices are issued by the Port Authority of Mount Athos and block the port for approximately 30-40 days a year.
