Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) is organically grown in the gardens of the Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. Available in doypack packaging that safely opens and closes multiple times.
It takes its name from the many bees that are attracted by its flower. The Arabs used it against depression and tension. In Mount Athos you will find it everywhere; in monasteries, cloisters and cells.
Beneficial properties: One of the most valuable herbs. It has the reputation that it acts against ageing. It is beneficial to the skin, nervous system and stomach. It has a stimulating effect on the heart and circulatory system; it causes dilation of the peripheral blood vessels and reduces high blood pressure. It is used as an ancillary treatment to allergies, heart palpitations, hypertension, insomnia, dysmenorrhea, dyspepsia, uric acid, febrile illnesses, flu, rheumatism and all forms of anxiety and stress.
Use: Add 1-2 teaspoons to 1 cup of boiled water for 5-10 minutes and cover it well. Drink 2-3 times per day. You can also use it in baking, distillery (benedictine) and cooking. It aromatizes meat for the oven, poultry, fish, soups and salads.
In Western Europe, they have a popular drink called "Eau de melisse des Carmes" that was firstly made by the karmelites monks in the 17th century. The recipe is as follows: let the flowers of lemon balm soak with lemon peel, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, anise and coriander for a few days in white wine without exposing it to the sun.
