This aromatic medicinal plant belongs to the Lamiaceae family. In the Mediterranean region, which seems to be the place of origin of the plant, have been recorded over 100 different species of the genus Sideritis. The produced tea with the name "Mountain Tea" has many beneficial properties, which are due to the constituents of the essential oil (flavonoids). The mountain tea is preferred especially in the winter months because of its beneficial effects on colds and inflammations of the upper respiratory system, properties considerably strengthened by the addition of the Athonite chestnut honey.
The beneficial effects are due to its anti-inflammatory, bacteriostatic and antioxidant activity. In addition, it is considered to be digestible, diaphoretic, tonic, nonirritating and anti-anemic because it contains iron (Fe). The tea is very tasty and aromatic and can be imbibed hot or cold. On Mount Athos grows the Sideritis athoa kind (Papan. & Kokkini), which is one of the 17 different species of Sideritis found overall in Greece.
