Hand painted icon of Saint Ansgar, made in Mount Athos, on natural wood. The icon is delivered in a wooden box.
Saint Ansgar, also known as Anschar, was born near Amiens, northern France, in the early 9th century. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised in the monastery of Corbie, Picardy, where he later became a monk. He embarked on significant missionary work, first in Denmark in 826 AD and then in Sweden, despite the prevalent pirate raids in the region. In 831 AD, Saint Ansgar was appointed as the first Archbishop of Hamburg in Germany. At the urging of Pope Gregory IV, he preached the Gospel in the Scandinavian countries for about 14 years. However, hostile raids and the devastation by the Normans in Scandinavia and Hamburg destroyed his work and forced him to withdraw. From 848 to 854 AD, he continued his missionary activities, returning to Denmark and Sweden. Saint Ansgar peacefully passed away at the age of 64 in 865 AD in Bremen, Germany. His memory is celebrated on February 3rd.
