According to popular folk tradition, the festive three days of December 4, 5 and 6 are called "Nikolovarvara", as it includes the feasts of Saint Varvara, Saint Savvas and Saint Nikolas respectively. In fact, in the Peloponnese these days are often associated with death, due to the bad weather conditions that prevail.
Saint Nicholas was born in the 3rd century AD in Patara, Lycia. He was Archbishop of Myron and took part in the first Ecumenical council. Many miracles occurred while he lived, but also after when he died in 330 AD. He is considered patron saint of the seamen. Saint Nicholas celebrates on December 6th.
Saint Barbara lived during the times of Emperor Maximianus, and she was the daughter of the rich idolater Dioscoros. From an early age she became a Christian and so she encountered great aggressiveness from her father, who was responsible for her decapitation. Saint Barbara is considered a patron saint as child protector. Saint Barbara celebrates on December 4th.
