Hand painted icon of Saint Poemen, made in Mount Athos, on natural wood. The icon is delivered in a wooden box.
Saint Poemen the Great (in Greek ‘ποιμην’ means shepherd) was originally from Egypt and at the age of 15, he decided to dedicate himself to an ascetic life. He followed his six brothers to a small skete in Egypt, where they formed a fraternity. His reputation for spiritual wisdom spread to many places, and many sought him for spiritual guidance. However, Saint Poemen only accepted humble and lowly people without hierarchical positions. One day, a judge kidnapped his nephew in an attempt to persuade Saint Poemen to meet him. In response, Saint Poemen sent a letter requesting that, if his nephew had committed any offense, the law should be enforced, despite the entreaties of his sister. He also emphasized, «Man needs humility as much as he needs the air he breathes. The humility of spirit is the life of the soul». He peacefully passed away around 450 AD and his memory is commemorated on August 27th.
