Dimensions: 20 x 24 cm.
The image of the Descent from the Cross is presented multifaceted, in order to emphasize the sadness and mourning, created by the dead and abandoned body of the Lord. On the left, Virgin Mary and the myrrh bearers are depicted, while on the right John the Theologian, Nicodemus and Joseph, secret disciples of Jesus. In the center, the dead body of Jesus dominates, in a way that unites the two sides. At the top, angels are depicted flying.
According to the Evangelists, Joseph asked Pilate for the Lord's body to bury. Then, together with Nicodemus, they wrapped the Lord's body in clean sheets and laid it in a rock-hewn tomb that Joseph had prepared. Nicodemus is depicted near the ladder needed for the deposition, holding tools necessary to remove the nails. Several pious women, who had attended the Crucifixion, also helped in the burial of Jesus.
