The Creed - Rev. Andreas Michailidis
This
treatise began when the writer commenced his Bible sessions with his
parishioners in Nottingham in 2001. He begun with a rather comprehensive
introduction to the study of the Bible before entering the main work of
analyzing the books of the New Testament and the Psalms.
When
he reached the point of dealing with the Creed, he realized how immense
the subject was and started dealing with its analysis. Finally, he
reached the point of writing a whole work: the book you're holding in
your hands.
The writer thought it was his duty, as a theologian
and as a priest, to let his parishioners, and as many Christians as
possible, know more about what they usually say when they recite the
Creed. Sometimes they recite it without really knowing what they are
saying; or if they do, they know very little. Sometimes what they think
they know is wholly or partially incorrect.
The writer knows that
he is not the first to write about the Creed. He merely thought of
giving his own interpretation of the Creed, especially based on his
theological research dealing with the concept of space and time, within
the framework of the solution of the theological problem about the
existence or not of a middle state of the souls. That is why the writer
thinks that this is a modern interpretation of the Creed. This does not
mean innovations that go beyond the ‘limits’ of our faith; that would be
absolutely contradictory to the essence of the present undertaking,
which deals with the Creed. The Creed means that revealed truths that we
believe in and these truths cannot change or be modified in any way
through the ages.
Whatever the writer says here is not his
knowledge but it is based hopefully on the wisdom of the Fathers of our
Church whom he has studied diligently.
The writer also asks to be
forgiven for any flaws in his writing. One might find errors in the
language. English is not his mother tongue.
