The Illness and Cure of the Soul in the Orthodox Tradition - Metropolitan of Nafpaktos Hierotheos S. Vlachos
The book "Illness and cure of the Soul" records real discussions
between Archimandrite Hierotheos (the author of the book) and a group of
Christians, who seek for answers in fundamental issues of the spiritual
life. According to Archimandrite Hierotheos the basic prerequisites for
being cured of passions is the awareness of being ill and the search
for healing and for someone who can help. The author also explains the
three stages of the spiritual life (purification of the heart,
illumination of the nous and deification), the three categories of
Christians (those who have not been cured, those being cured and those
who have been cured), and the two kinds of baptism (baptism in water and
baptism in the Spirit).
"In a meeting with
some Christians some time ago we had a very interesting discussion on
matters of spiritual life. Their questions and even their objections
were so many that I accepted to return in order to continue our
conversation. I considered it my obligation to present the basic points
of these discussions, because I think that they will be more generally
beneficial, since there are many contemporary Christians who have
similar questions and objections." (From the introduction of the book)
