Torments of the soul in the air by evil spirits after it separation from the body
According to the teachings of the Orthodox Church, the partial
judgement of souls by God is preceded by tormenting, or rather a series
of tests; these take place up in the air, where the evil spirits have
their domain (Eph. 6:12). They detain the souls and declare and manifest
all the sins which these souls committed during their lives. We know
about this tormenting in great detail because it was revealed to
Gregory, that disciple of Saint Basil the New, whose memory is
celebrated on the 26th of March. The monk Gregory, who is the writer of
this vision, lived at the end of the 9th century in Constantinople and
had the following vision under these circumstances:
At that time,
Saint Basil the New, his Elder, lived in Constantinople where a pious
woman, servant and discipline of the Saint, named Theodora, had recently
died. Gregory was worried about what had happened to Theodora's soul,
if she had been saved or not, and was begging his Elder Basil to tell
him something. Indeed, one day the Saint visited him and said to him
smiling:
-My child, do you want to see Theodora?
-How is it possible, Father, I asked him, to see Theodora who died long ago and is now in the other life? [...]
